Shopify Brings Integrated Store Credits to POS

Want to use Store Credits for checkout and returns on Shopify POS? Well, now you can!

Shopify POS Gets Store Credit

Shopify continues to innovate their POS retail landscape with the integration of native customer credits for point of sale. Starting with POS version 10.2.1, you can now tap into the Store Credit on any customer account and apply that balance to your Shopify retail POS. This elevates the Shopify POS shopping experience by giving customers “store credit” as a payment option. These are the same store credits available within the online store, thus extending Shopify’s unified commerce solutions and opens up many loyalty opportunities.

In the past, the management of store credits in Shopify POS required a separate app. This often presented a fragmented experience for online versus in-store sales. This created a less-than-ideal customer experience as the POS credits were not merged with the online balance. Shopify POS now does away with all this confusion by bringing customer credits directly into the heart of the POS interface. This streamlines the process and provides a clear, intuitive way to handle store credit transactions.

Unlocking a Better Shopping Experience with Store Credits

Shopify’s store credit feature allows you to add credit or debit amounts to any customer in your store. This adjustment happens right from the Shopify Customer Admin. The credit was then available (only) for online customers to utilize during checkout–POS merchants have long been jealous of this feature. Shopify has now extended the store credit feature into point of sale. The same credit amount can be used across both channels for the ultimate unified solution.

Using the credits on POS is super simple. Just use the new “apply” button that appears on the Cart. You must first add a customer to the cart and then the option will appear. When you look at the Cart screen, you will see the customer’s available store credit. The POS staff member can then apply the customer’s credit to the shopping cart without leaving the cart flow.

The store credit can even be used as part of the returns process. When a customer returns an item, you can optionally apply the returned balance to their account as store credit. This allows them to use the credit online or in-store. Shoppers love the idea of store credit since it offers an instant solution versus a credit card for example, which may take days to get their money back. With store credit, customers can keep shopping right away! Industry research shows that sixty percent of consumers are happy to take credit for their returns when the process is quick and convenient like in Shopify POS.

The customer can just as easily use that same credit to browse and buy online later that evening. This flexibility lets customers shop on their terms, leading to greater satisfaction. This direct reward system can significantly enhance customer engagement and drive repeat business.

New POS Payment Settings in Admin

New features equal new administration and Shopify has added great new capabilities to the POS Admin. Shopify has introduced a dedicated “POS Payments” settings section within the Shopify Admin (check out the screen shot above.) This new section allows you to manage which payment methods are accepted at your physical retail locations, including the newly added store credits. From this settings panel, you can enable or disable specific payment types for your POS devices. You can now take remote control over the POS checkout experience right from the Shopify Admin. Store managers now have even more (remote) control over the POS tiles, actions and payments. It’s a great way to align your in-store payment options with the rest of your unified commerce strategy.

These new POS Payments settings are a centralized management console, giving you control over your retail operations from anywhere. Whether you’re managing one store or a dozen, you no longer need to configure each POS device individually or rely on in-person setup. You can remotely adjust which payment methods are available at each location, ensuring consistency and compliance across your entire retail footprint. This centralized setup helps you roll out the new store credits feature across all stores in just a few clicks.

The Benefits of Shopify POS Store Credits

Shopify's commitment to unified commerce breaks down the walls between online and physical retail. Shopify’s approach brings a consistent checkout experience to the customer wherever they shop. Whether they interact online or in-store, their store credit balance remains readily accessible. This offers a significant advantage for customers and merchants.

  • Boosting Customer Retention: By providing a flexible and convenient way for customers to utilize store credit, merchants can significantly increase customer retention rates. Customers are more likely to return to a store where they have existing credit, fostering a cycle of repeat business.
  • Enhancing Efficiency: The centralized management of customer credits within the POS system reduces the need for separate apps and streamlines the processes for returns, exchanges, and loyalty rewards.
  • Better Customer Experience: Offering the redemption of store credit contributes to a more positive and seamless customer experience. Customers will like the option of using their store credit at any of your in-store or online locations.
