New Shopify POS Features and Updates July 2026
What's New in Shopify POS
Shopify has introduced several important Shopify POS updates here in July 2026 designed to make retail operations easier to manage, more secure and more transparent.
The latest features include automatic staff attribution, improved employee sales reporting, centralized device management, a detailed POS activity log and a redesigned connectivity screen. For merchants operating one or more physical stores, these Shopify POS updates can reduce checkout steps and give managers better visibility across their retail business.
The July Shopify POS updates include four major improvements:
- Automatic and faster staff attribution
- Centralized POS device management in Shopify admin
- A new Shopify POS activity log for high-risk register actions
- An improved connectivity screen
These updates give retailers additional tools for managing employees, devices, store security and day-to-day operations. Let’s take a look at each of these new features and how they can help your Shopify POS experience.
Automatic Staff Attribution in Shopify POS
Staff attribution identifies the employee who should receive credit for a Shopify POS sale. Shopify POS can now automatically attribute a sale to the employee who is signed into the register. This means eligible retailers no longer need employees to manually select themselves during every checkout. Now you may be thinking, didn’t Shopify POS have this feature before? Yes it did, but it wasn’t activated by default. Staff attribution in Shopify POS is now automatically enabled.
The feature is automatically enabled for eligible stores that have not already customized their staff attribution settings. Existing attribution configurations are not affected.
How Automatic Staff Attribution Helps You
Automatic attribution removes an extra step from checkout while improving the accuracy of employee sales data. If you offer staff commissions or need checkout accountability, this is a great help. It’s also a loss prevention tactic providing an audit trail for all orders. You can also use it to track things like:
- Track individual sales performance
- Calculate sales commissions
- Recognize high-performing employees
- Identify training opportunities
- Review which employees sold specific products
Automatic attribution can be especially helpful during busy sales periods when employees need to complete transactions quickly.
A Faster Staff Picker & Report
Shopify POS version 11.9 introduces a redesigned staff picker for transactions that require manual attribution. The updated staff selection experience includes:
- A new staff selection tile
- Faster employee search
- A redesigned staff view
- More relevant employees displayed first
This change is helpful if you have a long roster of employees or several employees working at the same location.
Staff attribution no longer appears on every product line by default. To review or change the employee associated with a sale, the cashier can select the line item and choose Attribute staff from the cart tray.
You can review the sales credited to each staff member by using the POS “total sales by staff member” report in your Shopify Analytics admin. These reports work alongside the existing Staff at Register report and give you more information about employee sales and performance.
You can use staff attribution reporting to evaluate:
- Total sales by employee
- Products sold by each team member
- Employee performance across locations
- Commission-related sales activity
- Staff participation in high-value transactions
Staff Reporting Supports Better Training
You can use this new reporting to help with your day-to-day operations and staff management. Let’s say the manager at one of your locations discovers that a certain employee consistently sells premium footwear while another employee performs well selling accessories. The manager can use this information to recognize employee strengths and build more targeted training programs or work assignments.
Staff reporting can provide useful data when combined with customer service observations, attendance and other retail performance measures.
Manage Shopify POS Devices From the Admin
The new “Devices” view in the Shopify POS sales channel gives you a centralized list of devices running Shopify POS.You can use this page to monitor tablets, smartphones, card readers and mobile POS devices across your business. The new Devices view shows:
- Whether a device is online or offline
- Which Shopify POS app version is installed
- Which devices have access to the Shopify store
- Which devices may require attention
The Devices view is available through the Shopify POS sales channel in Shopify admin. Only devices running Shopify POS version 11.9 or later appear in the list so make sure you are updating all of your POS devices and tablets to take advantage of this new feature.
This is a great new feature for larger or growing retailers that have several registers at each store and mobile devices. A bigger array of devices can get challenging to manage so this view gives you a real time snapshot of your stores. Without a centralized list, it can be difficult to know which devices are still active or whether each one is running the correct Shopify POS version.
How to use the Devices view
So how can you make use of this new view? Before a big event or in-store promotion, you could review the Devices view to confirm that every register is online and running the expected Shopify POS version. You can address device issues before the promotion begins instead of being discovered during checkout. This helps you maintain a more consistent POS experience across locations.
Remotely Log Out Lost or Stolen POS Devices
The Shopify POS Devices view also provides security controls for devices that are lost, stolen or no longer authorized. An administrator can:
- Remotely log a device out of Shopify POS
- Remove the device’s access to the Shopify store
A store administrator can open Shopify admin, locate the tablet in the Devices view and remotely remove its access. This helps prevent unauthorized access to customer information, orders and other store data. Device removal requires the correct staff permissions so this should only be assigned to managers or admins.
While this is a nice feature, it shouldn’t be used in place of a good MDM on the devices. If a POS tablet gets stolen you’ll want more security control over the full device, not just the POS app.
New Shopify POS Activity Log
The new Shopify POS activity log records important actions performed at the register. Each event includes the staff member, time, device and retail location associated with the action. This gives you a more detailed record of activity that may affect cash, customer information or transaction totals. The activity log captures:
- Cash drawer openings
- Cash additions
- Cash removals
- Mid-session cash counts
- Manual cart discounts
- Manual line-item discounts
- Transaction voids
- Returns
- Refunds
- Customer record access
- Manager overrides
These register actions are part of normal retail operations however, these actions can also contribute to cash discrepancies, or security concerns when they are performed incorrectly. The activity log will help you identify who performed the action and when it occurred.
Using the POS Activity Log for Loss Prevention
The Shopify POS activity log is a great way to support retail loss-prevention by making sensitive register actions easier to review. The log resolves staff and customer names so you can view all transactions.
For example, you can filter the log to see:
- All refunds completed at one location
- Every transaction voided by a specific employee
- Customer records accessed during a selected period
- Cash removals performed during a shift
- Actions that required manager approval
This creates a clearer audit trail and stronger operational controls across multiple stores.
